CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Breakfast is Served

The sun dipped low on the horizon, painting the sky in streaks of orange and pink as dusk settled over the land. I surveyed our ragtag group, noting the weariness etched on their faces after another long day of walking. We needed to find a place to set up camp for the night.

I motioned for everyone to follow me off the road, into a small clearing nestled among a grove of trees. “This looks like as good a spot as any,” I said, shrugging off my heavy backpack. “Let’s get settled in before it gets too dark to see.”

Sam and Dave immediately set to work gathering firewood from the surrounding area while Jake and I began unpacking our meager supplies. I watched as Linda and her kids lay out the bedrolls.

I watched as Sam stoked the small campfire, the flickering flames casting dancing shadows across the tired faces of all of us huddled around it. We finally had camp set up and broke out a few cans of beef stew and corn. It was an odd assortment but it would have to do.

We made a makeshift grill that hovered over the flames and heated up the cans of tonight’s dinner.

“Alright everyone, dig in,” I said, passing out the dented metal bowls and spoons. “It ain’t the Ritz, but it’ll fill your bellies.”

We all sat in silence as we savored the meal. The beef stew, despite coming from a can, tasted like heaven after a long day on the road. I watched as everyone hungrily spooned the hearty mixture into their mouths, relishing each bite. The crackling fire and the occasional clink of spoons against bowls were the only sounds breaking the stillness of the night.

I finally broke the silence and asked Jake, “How far do you think we have to go to get to the cabin?”

Jake set down his bowl and picked up his map, studying it intently in the flickering firelight. His brow furrowed in concentration as he traced our route with his finger.

“Hard to tell Joe, there have not been a lot of markers out here. But as near as I can figure, we might make it home tomorrow, but more likely the day after tomorrow.”

I nodded, trying to hide my disappointment. I had been hoping we’d reach the cabin sooner, but I knew Jake was doing his best to navigate us through this unfamiliar terrain.

“Alright, we’ll just have to make do with what we’ve got until then,” I said, looking around at our small group. “Everyone get some rest tonight. We’ve got another long day ahead of us tomorrow.”

As the others began settling into their bedrolls, I walked over to where Sam was keeping watch at the edge of the clearing. He acknowledged me with a slight nod as I approached.

“Anything out there?” I asked, scanning the darkened tree line.

“Nah, all quiet so far,” Sam replied, his rifle resting easy in his hands. “But I don’t like how exposed we are out here. The sooner we get back to the safety of the cabin, the better.
